The Obi Family
Obi is a name of a person or family name, also
may mean family land or house. Although Obi
may mean heart or chest under human parts.
However, here we mean a name of a person. In
Igbo language a name means aha. You can say
aha ha bụ Obi meaning their name or family
name is Obi. People would know when you’re
saying their name is Obi, they know you are
referring to their family name. You can say aha
ezi ụlọ ha bụ Obi meaning their family name is
Obi.
Family means ezi or ezi ụlọ. You can
sometimes use only ezi for family or use ezi ha
meaning their family. One could also say ezi
ụlọ ha which means the same as their family.
In many cases, you can refer to a family with
ndi which would be usually followed by the
family name like ndi Obi.
Father means nna or papa although nna mụ
means my father. Some people use m instead
of mụ like nna m this is the way they
pronounce it without the ụ being pronounced
but it is difficult to pronounce mụ without the
ụ.
Normally, children would refer to their father
as nna mụ which means my father.
Children or people sometimes would refer to
someone as nna anyi which means our
father, although the person is not their father
but they regard him as a father figure or they
regard him as old enough to be their father.
Husband means di although di mụ means my
husband.
Normally a wife would refer to her husband as
di mụ.
Children means ụmụ or ụmụaka but ụmụ mụ
means my children.
Twin children means ụmụ ejima or just twin
means ejima.
Mother means nne or mama although nne
mụ means my mother.
Normally children would refer to their mother
as nne mụ which means my mother.
Children or people sometimes would refer to
someone as nne anyi which means our
mother, although the person is not their
mother but they regard her as a mother figure
or they regard her as old enough to be their
mother.
Wife means nwunye although nwunye mụ
means my wife.
Normally a husband would refer to his wife as
nwunye mụ meaning my wife.
Children means ụmụ or ụmụaka but ụmụ mụ
means my children.
Twin children means ụmụ ejima or just twin
means ejima.
Grandfather means nnanna though nnanna
mụ means my grandfather or nnanna anyi
means our grandfather.
Grandmother means nnenne though nnenne
mụ means my grandmother or nnenne anyi
meaning our grandmother.
A boy or a young man means nwoke or nwa
nwoke.
Nwa mụ nwoke is mainly used by parents to
refer to their son or my son or our son.
Dinkpa is mainly used to refer to a strong boy
or man, although many parents use it for their
son either to show their son is strong or in
motivating the son in being strong.
Brother means nwanne nwoke although
nwanne mụ nwoke may be use to mean my
brother.
Enyi mụ nwoke may mean my boyfriend or
my friend who is a boy.
Son means nwoke but the first son means
ọkpara; ọkpala or di ọkpara; di ọkpala. Di
means husband and di ọkpara means the
person (first son) who will represent husband
or father if he is not around - which means the
first son would represent him (husband)
including taking all decisions.
The first son suppose to behave better and
guide his brothers (other sons), if he is not
behaving well (or when it is noticeable that he
is an idiot) and if the second or the third son is
behaving better than the first son, their father
may decide to nickname the second or the
third son as ọkparanna; ọkpalanna or
diọkpara nna; diọkpara nna ya; diọkpala
nna ya meaning father’s first son (although he
is not the first son but his father regards him as
the first son because he is behaving well better
than the first son).
A girl means nwanyi ; nwanyị ; agbọọ ; nwa
agbọọ or agbọọbia.
Nwa mụ nwanyị is mainly used by parents to
refer to their daughter or my daughter or
our daughter.
However enyi mụ nwanyị means my
girlfriend or a friend that is a girl.
Sister means nwanne nwanyị but nwanne
mụ nwanyị means my sister
Daughter means nwanyị or agbọọ or
agbọọbia but the first daughter means ada.
The first daughter suppose to behave better
and guide her sisters (other daughters), if she is
not behaving well or if it is noticeable that she
is behaving like an idiot, and the second or the
third daughter is behaving better than her (the
first daughter), then their father might
nickname the second or the third daughter as
adanna meaning father’s first daughter
(although she is not the first daughter but her
father regards her as the first daughter
because she is behaving well better than the
first daughter).
Their mother can also do the same by
nicknaming one of the daughters as adanne
meaning mother’s first daughter. However,
mother and father may decide collectively to
nickname a daughter adaanyi meaning our
first daughter.
However, there are many names bearing Ada
and they are all have various meaning:
In the case of Adaeze - this would mean king’s
daughter.
Adaobi - this would mean king or chief’s
daughter or a girl or lady with Obi father or
surname.
Adaisi - this would most likely be the lady in
charge of all the girls or daughters.
Adamma - this would mean fine or beautiful
lady or woman.
Adamụ - this would in most cases be a
nickname for my darling.
Adaukwu - this would mean the senior one or
the one in charge.
