Names of Vehicles in
Igbo Language
In Igbo language, many people especially elder
ones talk about three forms of vehicles. The
three forms of vehicles they talked about are
grouped. Airplanes, bikes, cars, buses, lorries,
boats, and ships. The first is the flying vehicles
that are called in Igbo language “ụgbọ elu”
which comprises airplanes, helicopters, and air
balloons. Meanwhile the second phrase is the
land vehicles that are called in Igbo language
“ụgbọ ala” which includes bikes, cars, vans,
buses, and lorries. And the final one is the sea
or water vehicles that are called in Igbo
language “ụgbọ mmịrị” which encompasses
boat, ships, and other kinds of vessels like
submarine.
Therefore, when someone says in Igbo
language ụgbọ ala, the person is referring to
those vehicles that run on the land such as
lorries, vans, buses but mostly the person is
referring to cars.
When someone says in Igbo language ụgbọ
elu, the person is referring to those vehicles
that fly on air such as helicopters, aircrafts,
jets but mostly the person is referring to
aeroplanes or aircraft.
When someone says in Igbo language ụgbọ
mmịrị, the person is referring to those vehicles
that run on water, sea or ocean such as boats,
yachts, ferries, submarine but mostly the
person is referring to ships.
