Do We Actually Need Another Buhari Airport That Cost Over ₦36 BillionWritten by Igbo Focus29th April 2023What’s this obsession about governors building airports instead of building roads? All the governors are without hesitation wasting states’ funds on useless things. Haven’t they got a project committee to oversee new projects and the naming of new projects.According to the Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi who made the announcement of completion of construction of Ebonyi state international airport in Onueke, which cost the state over ₦36 billion. The revelation by Governor Umahi that the airport would be launched sometimes in May this year and would be known as President Muhammadu Buhari Airport is not only a bad omen but an insult to the state. In spite of everything, we want to forget about Buhari and his atrocities in Igbo land especially in Ebonyi state. Two- or three-years’ time, imagine remembering Buhari when on a flight to Abuja, Lagos, etc. On the same wavelength, Dave Umahi boasted that the airport will provide employment for about 400 people in the state. The airport might fetch 400 employees, but would it make profit or meet its operating cost to sustain the operational of the airport. This is why a project committee or management is needed. Beforehand, when one starts a business not a petty trading but a proper business, he/she must weigh up the business from service or production point of view, right thorough to financial to marketing. What is more, hear the governor categorically utter his willingness to relinquish the airport meant for the state to the federal government to oversee it. This is after squandering state’s money (₦36 billion) on the airport. It is like building a football stadium within a state whilst asking the federal government to manage the stadium for the state. The problem with these governors would be lack of ideas or they have shifty mind otherwise building roads would be more profitable which would make states the most money than building airports. In London, they have this road called “M25” that stretches round London. M25 has about 10 service stations. Each of the service station has hotels, car parks, stores, eatery, petrol station, etc. Each service has about 1000 workers. Now 1000 workers multiply by 10 which gives 10,000 workers. Now, I am not comparing M25 that is about 70 miles long but if a governor within a state can manage to build 20 miles long road with 2 or 3 lanes and that has 1 or 2 service stations can be more profitable than airport in the state.

While I appreciate every government that is making an effort, I believe we should prioritize human development and lifting people out of poverty over building infrastructure. When basic needs like food, healthcare, and education are not met, investing in infrastructures such as airports, and international conference centers seems misplaced. The citizens cannot fully utilize them, and the infrastructure may not be maintained properly. Moreover, when the government fails to create employment opportunities and provide adequate support for the youth, it leads to the mismanagement and theft of these infrastructures. For instance, people may steal streetlights, solar panels, transformers, and other things provided by the government, just to survive. Therefore, I strongly recommend that the government invest more in human development, such as education, healthcare, and skills training programs. These investments can create jobs, reduce poverty, and build a more productive society. Additionally, they will enable people to make better use of infrastructures like airports and conference centers. To illustrate, I recall an interview with Alex Otti, where he pointed out that providing an airport for the people of Abia State was not the priority. Rather, there were more pressing issues to tackle, such as healthcare, education and empowering the youths of Abia(Aba). He suggested that the nearby Owerri airport could be used instead, which would save resources and be more accessible to the people.Human development increases productivity and helps to reduce inequality by providing opportunities for marginalized communities to access education and healthcare. When people are educated and healthy, they are more productive and able to contribute more to society. Providing quality education, healthcare, and skills training can improve the quality of life for individuals and help to create a more productive workforce that can drive economic growth. Infrastructure without human development is unsustainable. Building infrastructure without investing in human development can lead to inefficiencies and waste. Without a skilled and healthy workforce, infrastructure projects may not be fully utilized or maintained properly, leading to a waste of resources. In conclusion, while building infrastructures is vital, it is essential to prioritize human development to ensure that the citizens can benefit from these investments and create a more sustainable future.P.Love
